Professional indemnity and education for healthcare practice

MIPS membership includes indemnity insurance as part of the cover, support and education we provide to healthcare practitioners.

Healthcare professionals in clinical practice face significant risk of complaints, legal action and investigation. MIPS' indemnity insurance provides cover for up to $20 million. This meets AHPRA’s mandatory requirements. Indemnity insurance provides civil liability cover, including defence costs, for claims arising out of acts, errors or omissions you make in providing healthcare.

To complement indemnity, MIPS provides education to practitioners to lower the risk of complaints, legal action and investigation.

AHPRA Unplugged

Presenter: Rob Perry (Perry Maddocks Trollope, MIPS legal panel)

We all know AHPRA is the regulator of registered health professionals in Australia. But exactly what are they trying to achieve when they receive and consider a notification about you? What is the process if you are to be investigated? What are your obligations and what rights do you have? The focus will be on the Medical Board investigative powers when notifications (voluntary and mandatory) are made about you, the process, timelines and crux of the matter – what is considered when assessing if the public is at risk.

Just tell the truth - reports, certificates and evidence

Presenter: Emma Harman and Robert Samut (Barry Nilsson Lawyers)

At any time any practitioner may be called upon to provide evidence in medical negligence or other personal injury litigation, a Coronial inquest or in a criminal or Family Law setting. In all cases where you go to print be prepared to give evidence in court. Being properly prepared and cognisant of all the issues is paramount for all witnesses.

Medicare and the PSR

Presenter: Daniel Davison (Meridian Lawyers) and Dr Peter Simpson (GP and clinico-legal adviser)

As a healthcare practitioner you are legally responsible for services billed to Medicare under your Medicare provider number or in your name regardless of who does the billing or receives the benefit. The Department of Health has sophisticated methods of detecting possible inappropriate practice or incorrect claims and it is important that you remain prudent in all your billing as you will be solely responsible for repayment of the full amount in the event of an incorrect Medicare benefit.
